The foundation stone for Bremen Airport was laid in 1909. Due to an order of the senate to develop an airship port, the base on the parade ground was built. In 1920 the official inauguration of the airport in Bremen took place under the direction of the "Bremer Verein für Luftfahrt" (BVL). After many investments by the Senate in the following years, Bremen Airport is completely destroyed during the Second World War. In 1949, after administration by American troops, it was returned to the city of Bremen. The airport was then rebuilt and the runway was extended.

An important milestone was set in May 1956. On May 1, Lufthansa's commercial flying school opened in Bremen, where the basic training of pilots still takes place today.

In May 2009, a big celebration in favor of the 100th anniversary of Bremen Airport took place, which was celebrated by over 130,000 visitors.
