City Center of BremenHistory and Modern Spirit
The municipality of Bremen is the capital of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The federal state includes the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. With about 550,000 inhabitants, the municipality of Bremen is the 10th largest city in Germany.
On the market place in the center of the city is Bremen's landmark - the Roland. Since 1404, it has stood there as a symbol of justice and freedom. A few meters further you will find the Bremen City Hall. Together with the Roland, it is one of the historical highlights of the city of Bremen. Since 2004 it has been allowed to call itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humanity.
Most people will know them from the Grimm fairy tale: the Bremen Town Musicians. Directly on the west side of the town hall there is the most famous bronze sculpture of the four animals, consisting of donkey, dog, cat and cock. The artist Gerhard Marcks erected this statue in 1951 and since then the Town Musicians are one of the most famous landmarks of the city of Bremen.
Bremen's city center offers numerous shopping opportunities in addition to the sights and historical buildings. Especially popular are the Sögestraße and the Obernstraße, which are located directly in the center of the city. The car-free shopping miles invite you to stroll and store. In the small cafés along the streets you can relax with a cup of coffee or a small snack.
